Speed Up Internet Downloads

Reader rating: 3 out of 10

Introduction

Cable or DSL isn't available in your area yet? Then let this guide help you speed up your dial-up Internet connections.

This How-To Article shows you how to get the most out of your dial-up Internet connection, making downloads faster, web browsing faster, and shopping easier.

Speed Up Internet Downloads

Find a reliable ISP

Do you rely on AOL or another major provider for Internet access? Chances are that you can find a reliable local provider, who won't have the heavy traffic like AOL does. Try going to CNET's Internet Access Search page to search for an ISP.

Not all ISPs are the same. The speed of your Internet connection depends on how fast your ISP's high-speed Internet connections are, and how many customers they have, so choose an ISP carefully.

Your computer

You might have the 56K modem, but does that mean that your Internet connection will always be as fast as the modem provides? No. If your computer can't handle the speed of the connection, it is most likely that you will be stuck with a seemingly slow connection, even if you are connected at 56K.

If you have less the 64 MB of RAM on a Windows 98 computer, it is best to upgrade. RAM standards are up to 128 MB of RAM, so buy as much RAM as you can afford. Your local computer store should be able to advise you as to what type of RAM to purchase.

Optimize your computer

Tools like Disk Defragmenter can speed up your entire computer, as well as your Internet connection. This is especially helpful if you are low on RAM. To learn about using Disk Defragmenter, read this article.

Be sure that you have enough hard disk space available on your computer. Internet browsers will often "cache" many elements of web pages, making them faster loading when you return to them. Be sure to uninstall software that you no longer use.

Download speed boosters

There are many download speed boosters available. One of the best that we've seen is "Download Accelerator", which is available from CNET Download.com.

There are many factors that determine how fast your Internet connections are, and this guide should help you start improving your Internet connection.
