Fix Corrupted System Files

Reader rating: 4 out of 10

Introduction

Are you receiving errors on your computer that involve Windows system DLL files?

This How-To Article shows you how to verify the integrity of your Windows System Files using Microsoft Windows System File Checker.

Note: This How-To Article applies only to Microsoft Windows 98.

Fix Corrupted System Files

1. Click the Start button and select "Run..." from the menu that appears.

2. In the "Open:" text box, type "sfc.exe" (without the quotes).

3. Press the Enter key.

4. Select the "Scan for altered files" option. This will cause System File Checker to scan your computer's Windows System files and replace (with your approval) possibly corrupted files.

5. Click the "Start" button.

6. System File Checker will now scan your computer's Windows System files. If a possibly corrupted system file is found, you will be prompted asking if you would like to fix it. Select the correct options depending on your decision to fix it or not.

7. Once System File Checker is completed, a detail report will appear letting you know of the changes that were made and any other useful information.

8. If there were corrupted files that were repaired, you must restart to complete the process. A dialog box will prompt you to restart. Click "Yes" to restart.
