Maintain Your Computer
Reader rating: 3 out of 10 Introduction Maintenance should be a monthly task for you to complete. Maintenance on your computer should involve removing unused software, running Scandisk on your computer hard drives, and defragmenting your hard disk(s). This How-To Article provides you with information on what each of these maintenance tasks will do for you as well. Maintain Your Computer Remove unused software Have you ever taken the time to look at how much unused software is taking up space on your computer? Many people have this problem which can be easily solved. Make a list of the software you have on your computer that you no longer use. Next, uninstall this software (correctly through Windows Uninstaller). Run Scandisk on your computer Have you ever written files to your hard drive only to receive a "disk writing error"? These problems can usually be solved by running Scandisk, a full-featured disk utility that can repair the most common disk problems. Scandisk is a very easy program to run, without needing to set any complicated options. Using Disk Defragmenter As you work with files on your computer, they become "fragmented", or split into many pieces across your hard drive. When you try to open or write to a file, you computer's hard drive needs to look to many places to work with the file. This can decrease your computer's efficiency and therefore making access to files and programs much slower.
