Simple Formulas

Reader rating: 4 out of 10

Introduction

Need to do a simple math problem in Excel? Do you know how to create a basic formula?

This How-To Article shows you how to do some basic math in Microsoft Excel.

Simple Formulas

1. Click the cell in which you would like to place the answer to the math problem.

2. Type the following: =10+10.

Tip: Replace the two "10" numbers with the numbers you want to find the answers to. You can also change the operation of the formula. That is: you can change the "+" sign to "-", "*" (multiplication), or "/" (division). You can also enter algebraic type formulas in the cell.

3. Press the "Enter" key.

4. The answer to the formula you just entered will be shown in the cell.

Tip: You can change the "10" and "10" to the names of cells. (Example: =A1+A2) This will allow you to modify the contents of cells A1 and A2, and the sum of the cell which has this formula in it will update automatically.
