Generate Random Numbers

Reader rating: 5 out of 10

Have you ever wanted an easy way to create random numbers in Excel?

This How-To Article shows you how to create random numbers in Microsoft Excel.

Generate Random Numbers

1. First, you will need to check if you have the toolkit needed for this feature. Click the "Tools" menu and select "Add-Ins...".

2. Check the "Analysis Toolpak" item from the list.

3. Click OK.

4. Excel will now attempt to install this feature. (You may need your Office installation CDs.)

Note: If the "Analysis Toolpak" is already checked, then just click "Cancel".

5. Click the cell where you would like to create the random number.

6. Type the following formula: "=randbetween(a,b)" (without the quotes). Replace "a" and "b" with the range (starting range, ending range). (Example: =randbetween(1,5) might select 5 or 2).

7. Press Enter.

8. A random number between the range you entered will be selected.

Tip: Press the F9 key to select a new random number.
